Sally Painter has always had a special affinity for plants and an appreciation for the color, texture and detail of each speicies. Her oil and acrylic close-ups of blossoms, branches and leaves reveal an eye intimately attuned to the fragility and essence of everyday flora. Her palette is sun-drenched and her subjects enlivened. Her artistic ancestors might be said to be the Romantic landscape painters who saw emotion and narrative in the natural world without attempting to mold or create it.

Painter's petals seem to breathe on the canvas, brought to life by her layering of surface grains and careful choice of highlights, all the while inviting an almost disorienting familiarity with the flower subjects by using extremely tight framing.

"I illuminate alternative perspectives," Painter says. She describes her technique as "drawing you in with vibrant, powerful colors, appealing to your curiousity."

 

ARTIST STATEMENT

Color moves me

Growing up on a farm, fascinated by God's creations, I learned to appreciate the color and species of every species - each is unique, each a surprise. The leathery green of a magnolia leaf, peachy butterfly petals of a hibiscus flower, the new blue fluff of a bird in winter... all take me back to my childhood on the farm.

As a painter, I illuminate alternative perspectives, drawing you in with vibrant, powerful colors. I appeal to your curiousity, urging you, upon closer examination of my painting, to understand the message, and in some cases, the humor, in the image.

ROSALIND BRENNER, Artist & Poet

Rosalind Brenner is the owner and president of Manor Art Glass Studio in East Hampton, New York. Her unique designs and master craftsmanship have won her continuous commissions, including new work and restorations in ecclesiastic settings, homes and department stores throughout the country. Her art glass and fixtures may be found in such notable landmark buildings as The Chrysler Building in New York City, as well as the New School, Nordstroms, Neiman Marcus and others. She runs a busy studio where there are many works in progress, new as well as restorations.

Rosalind has painted on glass and created gouache presentations for her stained glass since the inception of her studio in 1972. She worked under two mentors, Benoit Gilsoul and Robert Cariola, who shared their knowledge of glass art and painting with her and she had a three-year apprenticeship at The Greenland Studio in New York City, where she worked on the restoration of stained glass from the Cloisters and the Metropolitan Museum.

In 1992 Rosalind began painting in watercolor, oils and acrylics, and experimenting with collage.

Rosalind's art pushes painting into the realm of the contemporary by blending her own re-purposed artwork and materials and experimenting with techniques to explore concepts and ideas. The work is a fusion of the observed and the purely imaginative. She enjoys painting inner landscapes, which range from luminous and evocative abstraction to forms from nature, women, calligraphy, figures, creatures and music. Her stained glass background is evident in her use of color, line and shape.

Rosalind received her MFA in poetry from Sarah Lawrence

College and often begins a visual work with a verbal concept drawn into the support that becomes partially obscured as the image emerges.

Brenner's paintings and art glass may be found in many

fine homes, including the collections of: Alec Baldwin,

the Gund family and Marci Klein.  

POSSIBILITIES/ENERGY PAINTINGS

Images & Poetry by Rosalind Brenner

 

A solo exhibition of Ms. Brenner's interdisciplinary work entitled "Possibilities/Energy Paintings" is currently on view through June 6th 2012 in the Esther Raushenbush Library Gallery of Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, NY.  

On exhibit are a selection of figurative abstract paintings, collage and poems as well as the artist's debut book of paintings and poems, All That's Left: Poems and Paintings by Rosalind Brenner, published by Art House Press.

The show fuses Brenner's visual images with her poems, coalescing the two elements into a third art, in which the words complement the pictures or vice versa, depending on how the viewer-reader responds.

 

ABOUT THE BOOK

Pulitzer Prize winning author Stephen Dunn writes, "In this compelling and beautiful book, Rosalind Brenner demonstrates through her poems and paintings that the "all" of ALL That's Left is considerable, while acknowledging the difficulty and fragility of the world she inhabits." 

Brenner's poetry has been published in The Cortland Review, Poetrybay, Long Island Sounds, The Southampton Review, Walt's Corner in The Long Islander, Taproot Journal, Performance Poets Association, Literary Review, Ontologica and in Arroyo Literary Review, among others.

The occasion commemorates the 56th anniversary of Pollock's death on August 11, 1956

 

ARTIST STATEMENT   

Spontaneity propels my process. I often start with words and swathes of delicious color. The words are eventually partially obscured by figures, faces, line, landscape. I form an alliance with my materials, be they acrylics, oils, watercolor, collage elements, to express the mystery of connection between interior and exterior. My paintings play with space that alternates between surface and three dimensions, between imagination and observation.

With an unconscious wish for a dialogue between my work and the observer of the piece, I paint freely, imagery that seems to emerge as the work progresses. I surprise and beckon myself into the piece as I sprinkle my abstractions with the in and out of broken line and space to further the illusion of falling into a new world.

Creating these works is for me an artistic-spiritual betrothal. As for all people who want to give meaning to life by working creatively or intimately with the raw materials at hand, making art is a merging that joins worker, work, and observer in a new reality that transcends the everyday and escorts us into an inexplicable realm. It is that realm that I express in my art.

Creating complex patterns in Camera using static colored lights

Behind the Lens*

Born and raised in England, Christopher has spent most of his professional life in Hollywood, creating music for feature films. He now lives in Bucks County, PA.

Photography however, has been a major passion of his since childhood and in 2010, Kennedy combined this love with another life-long fascination: colored lights. The result is what he calls Photo Luminism: Brightly colored complex images that portray luminescent, abstract patterns. These images are created totally in camera, in a single exposure with no creative digital manipulation. They are more like paintings than photographs. Using static light sources as the paint, and the camera as both brush and canvas, Kennedy applies multiple real time techniques to create dazzlingly vibrant contemporary art that has a unique character that seems to have a depth, motion and even light and shade.

The artist then prints these images onto brushed, high gloss aluminum, adding even more luminosity and a 3 dimensionality for yet an even more extraordinary effect.

The results are magical, jaw-breaking, commanding, exhilarating large scale works that can stop traffic, provoke thought and inspire stimulating conversation in just about any setting they are shown, from private residences to corporate and retail environments, hotel lobbies, restaurants and clubs. Christopher's images possess a color and brilliance that must be seen and experienced to be believed.

ARTIST STATEMENT

I’ve been fascinated by light and the way it’s perceived by the human eye since childhood. 

I used to hold brightly colored chocolate wrappers over my eyes to see how it changed my view of the world. Recently I became intrigued by the potential for creating images using lights as the source. There’s a certain magic to working with light in this way. Although I use the metaphor of ‘light as paint and camera as brush and canvas,’ that is where the comparison ends as I am effectively ‘painting’ in total darkness. The process involves taking a series of shots that will determine what actions create what effect and which I want to accentuate, alter or lose altogether. I call this step ‘experiment to perfection.’ It is the most exciting part for me as there are so many facets of creativity and unpredictability. I must accentuate that every image is captured solely in camera, in a single exposure with no creative digital manipulation after the shutter has closed as so many people believe I must be using a paint program! I am not.

My intention is to capture light performing an action that cannot be seen by the human eye; to show others how startlingly beautiful it can be. My desire is to create images that capture the imagination and invoke a sense of awe and wonder.

I call this process 'Photo Luminism.' In the early 1900's, Luminism was characterized by a unique clarity of light in painted landscapes. My work places the emphasis on that clarity of light but then also utilizes it as the subject. Printing onto brushed aluminum is really the icing on the cake. It shows off the images in an extraordinary fashion, that happily the human eye can see.

    

 

 

THOMAS LUND-LACK, Capturing the Art of the Sport

Paintings infused with powerful expressions of drama and movement are the hallmark of British artist Thomas Lund-Lack’s work. With every piece he creates, Lund-Lack hopes to arrest the motion of the subject and hold it fixed so that in a hundred years, when a stranger looks at it, it moves again.

Not surprisingly, Lund-Lack gravitates to Thoroughbred Racing as an irresistible subject matter perfectly suited to his style of work. Less preoccupied with the details of which horse or which race, the artist aims instead to capture all of the elements of racing in one impression. By incorporating figurative subjects, broken lines, abstract highlights and loose flowing brushstrokes along with a heavy application of paint, he readily accomplishes this goal.

Equally attractive as a subject matter are large and fast yachting boats, which together against a backdrop of sea and sky create the foundation for his impressive marine paintings.

To capture the movement of a wave or the light on the clouds is a challenge as it happens in a quick moment when all the elements are in harmony and fleeting. These elusive features are difficult to successfully bring together, yet they are the very elements Lund-Lack believes contribute to an attractive and exciting combination of colours and tones, reflective of many moods.

It is his skill in doing just this that becomes another signature of his work.

 

Many of Lund-Lack’s marine paintings also reflect his personal interest in history and a family background connected with the sea. It is not surprising to find naval subjects and early 20^th Century warships in his work. However, it is not the war that appeals to the artist, but again, the ships.

   

Tom is a self taught artist who started out in water colour. Through the influence of Hugo Grenville, Lund-Lack turned to oil paint, which he now uses exclusively.  He has worked hard to perfect his skills as an artist over the last twenty years.

In addition to creating art, Tom is the Chairman of Suffolk Open Studios and the founder of ARTactiv a group that offers art workshops bringing the joy of creativity to disabled children and young people across the English county of Suffolk.

Born in Devon, England, Lund-Lack has lived in Hong Kong, New Zealand, and London. He has made his home in Suffolk, England over the last 22 years with his wife, Amanda.

Tom’s paintings have been seen, exhibited and collected in Galleries, Art Fairs, Marine and Equestrian Shows in the UK and the USA as well as being featured in Equestrian publications throughout England. He was a featured artist in the Winter 2011 and Spring 2012 editions of The Artist Showcase magazine.

ART from the HEART - The Paintings of Lisa Jill Allison

Florida-based artist, Lisa Jill Allison believes art is a miraculous vehicle and that art is all around us... even in the simplest things. It is her desire as an artist to highlight the beauty through which we are surrounded. The intent of her work is put out into the world as "expressions of love to heal our hearts." 

With a background in Education, Lisa is also the author and illustrator of children's books. In keeping with her mission for creating works that are "expressions of love to heal our hearts," Lisa designed her children's books to help children of all ages feel safe in the world.

 

Lisa works in acrylics. Her canvases 'burst with an explosion of color depicting favorite themes in flowers, nature, women and art.'

             

 

Since taking the jump to pursue art full-time last Fall, Lisa's work has been 'exploding onto the art world' and she has been shown in numerous venues throughout Florida and New York including:

Now that they are free again, we use Pandora 24/7 and promote their service at every turn (like now). We feel strongly that in order to become viable, we cannot ask viewers for a fee if we want this model to gain steam.

Will this project complete if not successfully funded by Kickstarter? Absolutely! We used Kickstarter to get attention and it's working. And we've just put in a 'reward' for qualified artists to pay their discounted setup fee here, to push that figure closer to our quota. We should have thought of that one a little earlier in the campaign!

Are there any other costs associated with being part of ArtMuse? Yes, there is a monthly membership fee which ranges from $15 to $30 per month, depending on the number of images an artist is showing, with a max number of images at 20.

When My Ship Comes In...

I can only hope it looks like this! 

 

The Normandie (pictured left) is one in a collection of six images capturing the beauty, eloquence, majesty and historical significance in each of the six main ships from The French Transit Line's History - Les Grands Paquebots! 

 

The exquisite Collection of Les Grands Paquebots were:

LA TOURAINE, 1891 - In 1886, a new ship was ordered from the shipyard of penhoet, 'La Touraine'. She was to be used for the New York run. On June 20, 1891, La Touraine left Le Havre for New York on her maiden voyage. She arrived on the 27th, having crossed the Atlantic Ocean in 7 days, 4 hours, a performance that was improved on with subsequent trips. This accomplishment took The Atlantic Blue Ribbon, a symbol of the fastest speed on the North Atlantic, away from the English fleet.

FRANCE, 1912 - Intended to replace 'Ile de France' and the 'Liberte' on the New York run, the purchase order for this ship was signed on July 25, 1956. Construction started October 7, 1957 on the same dry dock the ship 'Normandie' was built. This would be the last time a ship was built in St. Nazaire.

The President of the French Republic attended the ship's christening held on May 11, 1960. 

During the crossings of August 16 & August 27, 1963, the France beat its own records of passengers transported, 1992 going and 2044 returning for a total of 4036 persons.

On Novemer 8th, 1968, at 1:30am, GMT, the France had travelled one million miles.

PARIS, 1921 - The ship 'Paris' commenced being built at the shipyard in 1913. Three years later, service began on September 12, 1916. On June 15, 1921, the Paris sailed on its inaugural trip to New York. In May 26, 1923, a movie house was set up on board.

By 1930, the 'Paris' leaves the fleet.

 

 

 

 

DE GRASSE, 1924 - The De Grasse made its first voyage from Le Havre to New York on August 28, 1927. The ship was completely refurbished in 1945, changing its passenger capacity to 360 in First Class and 360 in Cabin Class. On July 12, 1947, service between Le Havre and New York is resumed. On March 28, 1963, the De Grasse is sold to Canadian Pacific. 

 

 

 

NORMANDIE, 1935 - The building of the Normandie began in the shipyards of St. Nazaire in January 1931 in the midst of the American economic crisis. One of its assured characteristics were 5-day crossings. Very luxurious decorations were commissioned to the best decorators. A grandiose inauguration took place in Le Havre on May 29, 1935, attended by the President of the French Republic. 1070 passengers were aboard the first voyage to North America. After a port-of-call in Southampton, the Normandie arrived in New York on June 3 doing an average speed of 29.94 knots.

A triumphal welcome awaited the Normandie upon arrival on the Hudson River. Two awards were presented to 'Cie. Gle. Transatlantique' for the longest and fastest ship ever afloat. The return trip from New York to Le Havre with 1494 passengers on board took place on June 7th and the average speed was 30.31 knots. The Normandie was awarded the Blue Ribbon. When WWII started, the Normandie had made 135 crossings, transporting approximately 135,000 passengers.

On February 9, 1942, in New York, a fire started on board. Under the weight of the water used to extinguish the fire, the ship capsized. 

 

ILE DE FRANCE, 1949 - Departs Le Havre, at 4:10 pm on September 2, 1939, only to return on June 30, 1949 to Southampton where it arrives the same day at 9:15pm. Leaves this port June 3 at 5:05am (a few hours prior to declaration of war) and arrives in New York, September 9, 1939 with 1777 passengers aboard. After some transformation, the Ile De France departs New York, May 1, 1940 for Marseille with approximately 2200 tons of freight, including 28 airplanes and arrives in Marseille May 10, 1940. Following additional transformation, the Ile De France departs Marseille May 31st for Indochina via Dakar and the Cape to fetch Indochinese workers. However, on the way from the Cape to Saigon, the ship is advised in the middle of the Indian Ocean that the Armistice was signed and decides to change course toward Singapore when it arrives June 30, 1940. 

On July 19, 1940, the Ile De France was requisitioned by the British government. From 1944 on, after some modernization in New York, the Ile De France is used as a troop carrier.

On September 19, 1945, a French crew takes possession of the ship which continues to navigate the orders of the Transport of War Ministry bringing troops back from Europe to their country of Origin.

The French Line deliciously epitomized the 'French Way of Life' luxury, art and voluptuousness. Gastronomy was the order of the day, yet these ships also served an important role in World War II.

Only 2000 coaster sets and fewer than 1300 placemat sets were made for private distribution by the French Line Transit Company as promotional giveaways and Holiday Gifts in 1991. These were never sold at retail, and as such are Highly Collectible, only occasionally turning up at select antique auctions or shops having a previous connection with The French Line.

HOOKED ON FISH PLATTERS & THE ART OF GYOTAKU

Gyotaku (ghio ta koo) gyo means fish, taku means rubbing. Gyotaku is the Japanese Art of Hand Rubbing Fish Prints on Fine Rice Paper.

Fish printing originated in Japan or China in the early 1800's. In Japan, Gyotaku is practiced by sportsmen to preserve records of their catches.  

Florida artist, Gregory Aragon, holds a Captain's license and makes his living as master of a deep-water fishing vessel. He became fascinated by Gyotaku, studied and mastered the art, and has been making Gyotaku prints for more than two decades. His work is displayed in galleries and private collections in the United States, France, and England.

While on display at the New Orleans Gourmet Products Show in the Spanek Enterprises' booth, Greg Aragon's fish rubbings were discovered by A. Santos Company, one of the leading ceramic manufacturing companies in Portugal. "These would make great platters!" said Licinio Reis, owner of A. Santos. "We have a great decal company who could reverse these images so we can apply them to our unique ceramic platters." And a new product for Spanek's L'Art Pour La Table Collection was spawned!

Not only can we now enjoy the beauty of Aragon's artwork as well as the inherent beauty of the fish he chooses as his subjects, but these ceramic platters themselves are functional works of art! These amazing platters are freezer-proof, dishwasher safe, and can take oven temperatures of up to 250 degrees C/500 F. They are lead-free and safe for all food use under the FDA California Lead Standards, allowing you to cook, serve and freeze your food all on the same platter. About the Artist

Guy Buffet's work is well-known in both advertising and fine-art contexts. His portraits of waiters (for example, "Les Garçons" and "The Charge of the Flower Bottle Brigade") and restaurant staff are famous, as are his impressionist scenes of his native Paris and his adopted homes of Hawaii and California. He is regarded as one of the living masters of French contemporary impressionism. Guy Buffet shares wall space with Toulouse Lautrec at the Perrier-Jouet Museum in Paris and has been their official artist as well.

Showing unique fascination for color, Buffet's canvas seems to know no boundaries. He takes the casual observer into his work both visually and emotionally. His intention is to create a stopover point where an individual can rediscover the beauty and gaiety which life has to offer.
