About the Artist

Guy Buffet's work is well-known in both advertising and fine-art contexts. His portraits of waiters (for example, "Les Garçons" and "The Charge of the Flower Bottle Brigade") and restaurant staff are famous, as are his impressionist scenes of his native Paris and his adopted homes of Hawaii and California. He is regarded as one of the living masters of French contemporary impressionism. Guy Buffet shares wall space with Toulouse Lautrec at the Perrier-Jouet Museum in Paris and has been their official artist as well.

Showing unique fascination for color, Buffet's canvas seems to know no boundaries. He takes the casual observer into his work both visually and emotionally. His intention is to create a stopover point where an individual can rediscover the beauty and gaiety which life has to offer.

Magic Revealed in the Paintings of JULIO SUSANA

What is immediately evident in Susana's work is his imposing capacity to regulate the forms and compositions so as to inspire a quality of 'livid presence' that permeates his paintings. This is that essential vitality, which makes each work, come alive for the viewer. Martin Heideger, the philosopher, writes incisively and poetically on this quality by invoking the word 'spaciousness' and considering this quality as essential in a true artwork. He writes "... in a world's worlding that spaciousness is assembled out of which the protective grace of the gods is granted or withheld... Insofar as a work is a work (of art), it gives place to that spaciousness." The permeable sense of timelessness, which is so evident in the artist's work, allows him, as Charles Baudelaire describes the task of all great artists, to "distill the eternal from the transitory".

Susana asserts both the corporeal presence as well as the allegorical quality of the cast of characters in his monumental artwork, which are persuasive examples of post-modern efforts to examine the relationship between people and their social and cultural environments. Julio Susana has a restless mind and an equally restless imagination that probes and searches for the hidden connections between people and the very stuff of existence. Susana sets his sights high: his artistic vision plumbs the depths of what constitutes our perceptions of coherency and indeterminateness.

In the artist's world where the symbolic and the real coincide in a profusion of engendered space, we see endless patterns that seem to spawn driven by powers of figurative form and the infinite resources of the imaginary. Susana celebrates the web of intricacies that join us together, which determines the fates of mortal men. The visual result is hauntingly authentic art that transcends time, space and cultural boundaries. The magical aspect of each work is the psychic residue left between the ineffable distance of conscious reality and unconscious processes of recording the beauty of Susana's painterly application. This is the gift that this artist so provocatively brings to the world and it stems from a rare discernment and the capacity to see beyond sight's everyday parameters.

Fundamentally, Susana's visual work allows a psychic field of reality and a realm of magic to become manifest. Acting alone each is not a necessary and sufficient state to create the potential for great art. Together they can  create visual models of heightened consciousness. Julio Susana's paintings affirm the status of a work of art as an attempt to express something unique, something that is complete and absolute. The oscillation between both poles produces work, which is an ode to humanistic vitality, drawn forward by its own radiant sense of self-sufficiency, of its own sense of inner-necessity.

Portrait of an Artist

  

  As a young girl, Enzie Shahmiri was drawn to the intense facial expressions she witnessed in the people surrounding her through life.  Equally compelling for her was the desire to capture those expressions on paper, first through a child’s crayon impressions, then pencil, pen – and ultimately through oil paints, the medium she now uses. Enzie has the rich, cultural heritage of a unique upbringing. Having lived in many countries, including Austria, Germany and Iran, she draws upon a plethora of civilizations and life-altering experiences (the revolution in Iran) to store within her arsenal of creative images for artistic reference.

Sadly, like so many young artists, she was met with too many experiences that squelched her creative pursuits – until the time came at a point much later in life where she could no longer resist her true calling. Enzie was then powered not just by her passion to paint but to acquire the best training she could possibly afford.  That eventually brought her to satellite workshops in Atlanta and Las Vegas offered by the Art Students League in NYC where she met her mentor in the award-winning artist and instructor, Marvin Mattelson.

Enzie credits Marvin for teaching her the technical skills she needed to learn how to paint realistic flesh tones in the Old Masters style she so lovingly longed to capture in her own work.  Mattleson also instilled discipline and proper work habits into her routine. Coupled with her own natural talent, dedication, hard work and endless hours of perfecting all that she was taught, Enzie’s work took a turn towards the greatness she continues to pursue. Since that time, Enzie has achieved numerous awards, countless exhibitions, ongoing shows and endless private commissions from around the world. Her work just keeps getting better and better, her passion deeper, and her motivation, unparalleled. Today, Enzie’s creative pursuits know no boundaries in every aspect of her life. What's Not to Love...

... about an Art Exhibition entitled Love & Passion: Lust for Life? 

Curated by Karyn Mannix, and benefitting Ashawagh Hall in The Springs section of East Hampton, NY, Love & Passion: Lust for Life will showcase the works of over 50 artists, including many that collaborate with The Art Marketer. The works exhibited promise to be as diversified as each of the artists entering, and entries are still being accepted as we speak. Poets will likewise have an opportunity to read their pieces that fit within the theme in The Love & Passion Poetry Reading scheduled for Sunday, February 21^st at 12:30pm. There will be music, refreshments and a 50/50 raffle drawing, not to mention an eclectic crowd of creatives and collectors that have been coming together to make this an annual Hamptons happening now for five years!

A percentage of all sales will benefit the building fund at Ashawagh Hall. Dating to 1844, Ashawagh Hall started out as a schoolhouse, evolving in more recent years as a venerable community center that plays host to a regular calendar of ongoing arts & cultural activities throughout each year.

The Portrait Artist

  

Speaking of Mother - brings me to the subject of an Art Form I think has long gone unrecognized, The Portrait Artist. As a society, we have images of portraits emblazoned in our minds from history lessons and historic houses where once-upon-a-time photography may not have existed and all that may remain of the images we reflect upon come through the images that the artists of those eras created. Portaits line the walls of many fine houses paying tribute and homage to their descendants, and reflecting a slice of their life - in the expression on their faces, the clothing they wore, the chair that they sat in, or the pose that they took, along with all the details of the room or landscape surrounding them in the backgrounds (and foregrounds) of their image.

I remember Mother sitting for this portrait in our own Long Island home right about the same time the photo in my first post was taken (c1965). The photo was taken by a professional, and although it took some time to be getting the family freshly showered, nicely dressed, and carefully posed, it took nowhere near the time invested in painting Mother's portrait. I remember Mother sitting for hours over a period of days, no doubt, weeks, wearing her best dress, and an expression on her face that captures her own essence to this day. While the photographer captures a moment in time, I credit the Portrait Artist with capturing a Soul, and I am grateful to him for doing such a fine job in doing that with this image of my Mother.

Mother's portrait took a prominent spot in our living room in those days, until she passed and it was too painful for my father to come home to this vibrant, healthy image of the love of his life. He quietly took it down and stored it safely away in a closet, until, he, too, passed and I inherited it. Once again, it holds a prominent place above the piano that sat regally in our living room, only now the setting is my own living room. It serves to remind me of a happy childhood long past and the woman who made that happy childhood all possible. The Artists' Portrait captures her spirit in a way no photograph has ever come close. I see her watching over me, nurturing me, guiding me, and I hear the advice she would be giving me with each stumbling block I come upon in life... she hasn't steered me wrong, yet, and I don't expect she ever will. So it is I have to be grateful for the Portrait Artist who has helped me keep this image of her alive, no doubt the result of his own talent and inspiration in capturing his subject's aura.

It grieves me to hear how this art form, like so many these days, is suffering during this time of recession. In an era of instant gratification, there are those who may not see the value in sitting for a portrait, let alone paying a high price for an image many feel may be captured in a photograph. And while I value the Art of Photography as equally as I value many other Art Forms, I still feel the Portrait Artist has a Gift separate from other Arts. Even my own photo of this portrait pales in comparison to the experience of viewing the portrait firsthand, where the viewer is drawn into the frame, much as s/he is with any art, as if to start a conversation with the subject. 

This post encourages you to recognize that gift, take a few moments to appreciate someone's portait art, and invite a portrait artist into your own life to capture your own essence for your family to treasure now and for generations to come.

It is fitting that I am starting my first blog on Mother's Day Weekend... the inspiration suddenly came to me as I was driving home from a client. In the business of helping others market themselves, I suddenly realized I had let my own PR efforts fall by the wayside and knew instinctively I had to do something about that. I have long thought about starting a blog, but the question always arose, where do I begin? And what do I write about? I don't want my blog to be all business-like. I have a website and a newsletter to do that. Yet, I don't want to get too personal, lest I let down my professional guard. So I hope to combine the best of both worlds here in my blog as they both integrate with one another to create the person that I am, and continue to evolve to be. It fits that my first blog should be a tribute to my mother, with whom it all started.

It was my mother who inspired so much of my creativity from such a young age. My mother created a loving home for my father, my two older brothers and I. We had a comfortable lifestyle in the suburbs of Long Island with the close proximity of New York City just a train ride away. Mother taught me how to bake cookies, entertain, shop, paint, cross-stitch and do other forms of needlepoint. She afforded me lessons in: art, ballet, clarinet, piano, horse-back riding and she created the best birthday parties ever! She had a sense of style and grace that friends and family say I carry with me to this day. More importantly, she had integrity, intelligence, perception and a warm heart that lives within each of the lives she touched and will forever live within me.

Mother was only with us for a very short time. She was diagnosed with breast cancer when I was twelve years old and died three years later - shortly before my Sweet Sixteen. The year was 1972. And even though that was over thirty years ago and I have since become a mother myself, I continue to be grateful for the foundation she laid for myself and my brothers, the example she set for me to follow in my own parenting, and her passion for the Arts that she so generously shared.

Here's to you Mom, and to all the Mother's of the World, who may not always get the Recognition and the Appreciation that they so deserve.
