Christine Alfery's 'Snake Charmer' Receives Award for 'Outstanding Abstract' in the Illinois National Exhibition

Christine Alfery's work from her Circus Series titled "Snake Charmer" just received an award for "Outstanding Abstract" in the IIlinois National Exhibition. "Snake Charmer" has been accepted in the Northwest Arts Center's Americas 2019: All Media Exhibition and was also honored there with a merit award. 

"Snake Charmer" was a featured work in the Spectrum Exhibition during Art Basel week in Miami (December 2018), in the Art Blend Gallery's exhibition space along with the entire collection, including "Circus Series", "Diva", "Blue Lady" and "Performers: Send In The Clowns." 

 

"My artwork is like a storyboard that speaks to my philosophical beliefs about life, the roads I have traveled and the questions I have asked and tried to answer. My work speaks to the concept of choice and the changes choice brings about. ABOUT THE ARTIST

Christine Alfery has been creating and selling her art since the 1960's. In the 1990's she was a creative force on the national interior design scene. As her style has evolved, so has the interest, intrigue and demand for each expression of her work. Christine's paintings have been widely exhibited in museums, galleries and in corporate and private collections throughout the United States and the world.

Her artistic style shows a maturity that comes from a lifetime of creative exploration. Christine's "experimental abstractions" are filled with playful iconic symbols which enable her to ''integrate the real with the abstract''. Christine is deeply influenced by the abstract expressionists, including: Hans Hofman, Mark Rothko, Elaine and Willem de Kooning, Jackson Pollock, Joan Mitchell, Helen Frankenthaler and Cy Twombly, to name a few, yet her style is uniquely her own.

Christine earned her Bachelors of Science degree, her Master's degree in Education, her MFA degree and her Ph.D in Contemporary Art History from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

She shows her contemporary, conceptual watercolor and acrylic paintings nationally and internationally. She competes in watercolor competitions around the world. Christine has won over 100 national awards and is a signature member of 10 national watercolor societies. She has been in more than 60 publications.

Christine Alfery Wins Prestigious Award for "Golden Nuggets"

Christine Alfery has won the Board of Robert Burridge Experimental Acrylic/Mixed Media Ward in the 44th Annual Western Federation of Watercolor Societies' exhibit, held this month at the San Diego Watercolor Society. 

 

Acclaimed juror Kathleen Conover said of the work, "Golden Nuggets has a lot of different techniques - line, color, texture. It's very fun and expressive."

The real, the natural and her sense of  life inspires Alfery to create. 

"Rules have a function. They establish a foundation from which an artist can expand, experiment and explore ideas in the pursuit of creativity, discovery and art," says Alfery. "If creativity and discovery are what art is, and I believe they are, then art needs to fall outside of established foundations, lines, rules and boundaries."

 

As shared in a press release issued by the San Diego Watercolor Society (SDWS):

We are pleased to announce that Christine Alfery, a member of the San Diego Watercolor Society, has been juried into the Western Federation of Watercolor Societies (WFWS) 44th Annual Exhibition currently being held at the San Diego Watercolor Society (SDWS) Gallery, San Diego, CA 2825 Dewey Road (Liberty Station). Christine's painting entitled "Golden Nuggets" was one of 100 selected from among 952 entries from nine western watercolor societies by nationally-known juror Kathleen Conover. The exhibit, which is free and open to the public, is running from May 1st thru May 31st 2019 at the SWDS Gallery (and is still on view at the writing of this blog). 

The annual exhibition is hosted by a different member society each year. This year the host is the San Diego Watercolor Society, now celebrating its 54th year in operation. WFWS has a combined membership of more than 6,000 western artists. WFWS was founded in 1974 to encourage and recognize the visibility of watercolor as an artistic medium through these annual exhibitions.

Concept Driven Journeys

For the longest time I have been working on artwork with contents that are associated or represented by the concept of “journey.” The journey for me can be, concept oriented. That is what it takes to get an idea going, the research, the break through and discovery of something new, different, unique, original. My journeys in my work are always concept driven.

There are other journey’s to be considered when I create. They might be context driven. For example, some might include the paths others take to reach a certain point, solve a certain problem. The context can be animal driven, like a herd of elk migrating for the season. The migration of monarch butterflies, birds. The historical context of intuits, or tribal travelers.

We have all heard the saying that life is a journey. For me this saying is a journey of contents. How do I feel about this or that? Often art or any kind of work for that matter can be content driven that is political, makes a statement about one thing or another. Women’s rights is an excellent example.

The journeys in my work are mainly concept driven, but can include, mostly by accident contacts and content. My circus series is an excellent example of combining content, concept and context. Most of my work is a journey. For the most part if it is a personal concept driven journey I will put this work into my journey series. The works you see are concept driven journeys. When I am looking for something – solving a problem – the work is concept driven.

There is usually a path in these works- where I leave my footprint. Like a footprint in the sand only this is a journey taken in my work.
