And might I say she seems to excel in everything she endeavors to do. Wife, Mother, Artist, Writer, Poet, Teacher, Outdoorsman, Adventure seeker...

On a recent trip to the Northwest Territories of Canada, including Eagles Nest River and Kasba Lake (left), Christine looks right at home catching a Trophy 18# Lake Trout as she does painting in her studio!

The trip inspired her newest series on Rivers. All of which relates to so many of the other themes we find in her work - Traveling, Journeys, Nature...

One thing is for sure, she brings a positive and passionate spirit to everything she accomplishes, which might well explain why she does excel in everything she engages in, not to mention the extraordinary energy, momentum and vision she brings to everything she touches - which is never more apparent than as it is reflected through her art work.

ABOUT CHRISTINE ALFERY

Christine Alfery has been creating and selling her art since the 1960’s. In the 1990’s she was a creative force on the national interior design scene. As her style has evolved, so has the interest, intrigue and demand for her work. Christine’s paintings have been widely exhibited in museums, galleries and in corporate and private collections throughout the United States and the world.

Her artistic style shows a maturity that comes from a lifetime of creative exploration. Christine’s “experimental abstractions” are filled with playful iconic symbols which enable her to “integrate the real with the abstract.” Christine is deeply influenced by the abstract expressionists, including: Hans Hofman, Mark Rothko, Elaine and Willem de Kooning, Jackson Pollock, Joan Mitchell, Helen Frankenthaler and Cy Twombly, to name a few, yet her style is uniquely her own.

Christine earned her Bachelors of Science degree, her Master’s degree in Education, her MFA degree and her Ph.D in Contemporary Art History from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

She shows her contemporary, conceptual watercolor and acrylic paintings nationally and internationally. She competes in watercolor competitions around the world. Christine has won over 100 national awards and is a signature member of 10 national watercolor societies throughout the United States. She has been in more than 65 publications.

Susan Marx Exhibition at FIAF in Montclair, NJ April 3 thru April 27

 

 Susan Marx will exhibit 35 paintings at the FIAF (French Institute Alliance Francais) in Montclair, New Jersey for the month of April.

The Opening Reception coincides with the

French Institute Alliance Francais' Open House Event.

The Open House Event & Opening Reception start at 2 pm on April 3rd.

 

Marx was chosen as an artist whose work is heavily influenced by French Impressionists and the Fauves. An Abstract Impressionist painter, Marx has traveled to France on many occasions to paint in Giverny and Provence, and will be exhibiting many of the works that she painted while on these trips.

A native to New Jersey, Marx can also often be found painting 'en plein air' at various gardens throughout Montclair in her Abstract Impressionist style. She will be exhibiting many of these works in this show as well. 

 

These paintings will decorate the FIAF offices in Montclair starting with the April 3rd Opening Reception and running through April 27th.

The opening reception coincides with FIAF's Open House for their Spring Season. The Reception & Open House begin at 2 pm on April 3rd.

The paintings may be viewed whenever FIAF is open.

Susan Marx is an Abstract Impressionist artist whose paintings are the result of her radical amazement at the beauty of the visual world and her need to turn that experience through her into paint. Using nature as her frame of reference, Marx paints her interpretation of what nature leaves her with. Her paintings are the conversations between her eyes, her mind, her heart and her gut and the canvas in front of her. Marx enjoys enticing and engaging her viewers, drawing them into her work.

in a group exhibition at the Ashok Jain Gallery

on the Lower East Side, 58 Hester Street, New York, NY

There will be an Opening Reception on Sunday, March 6th from 3pm to 6pm.

Two large 45x34 paintings in the exhibition were painted in a studio in Giverny this past May on a rainy day remembering subconsciously the sensations of seeing Monet’s Pond.  Giverny I shows changing colors of the water; Giverny II shows reflections of clouds in the pond.  They are acrylic on unprimed canvas.  Her other paintings in this exhibition are 30x24 acrylic on canvas; they are color sensations and compositions distilled from what nature leaves within her in her native New Jersey.

Susan Marx 'With Yellows' featured in ArtNews December 2015

 

Susan Marx With Yellows, 30" x 24" acrylic on canvas, is the featured art/ist in a Full Page Advertisement in the December 2015 issue of Art News. The Full Page Ad also marks the debut of LF Contemporary, a virtual gallery of select contemporary artists represented by The Art Marketer.

 

The image was chosen for its unique embodiment in representing Marx's work. Marx is an Abstract Impressionist Painter who has been influenced by the works of the Abstract Expressionists and Impressionist painters, most notably, Monet.  She paints what nature leaves with her.

Marx has painted in Monet's gardens in Giverny and has been on several other painting retreats in France.

SUSAN MARX Post Giverny

Four months after having returned from her inspirational trip to Giverny, I asked Susan Marx (left) a few questions to determine if and how she has seen that this trip has continued to affect her painting today.

 

 

 

THE ART MARKETER:

I would like to have more information on how you see/feel your work has changed since your last Giverny trip?

How was this trip different from previous trips?

Are you looking at things differently, or using different painting techniques?

Or colors?

Do you see the same places you paint in NJ through different eyes now that you are back?

Have you discovered new places to paint?

Any other thoughts or insights you'd like to add?

 

 

Following is her response:

 

I have always paid attention to shape, light and color, but after my recent trip to Giverny, I am paying even more attention. The space has become flatter; there is no horizon  line.  I try to remember what  my muse, Monsieur Monet "whispered into my ear" while I was painting on his Japanese Bridge.

 

 

 

 

 

My trip this past May was different from the last time I painted in Giverny in 2008. My work has become much looser and the heavier paint in my brushstrokes is more visible. 

 

 

Then, my paintings were 16x20, acrylic on masonite, and now my paintings are  30x24, also acrylic, but I now paint on stretched canvas. 

 

 

Someone once commented to me when I was painting in the smaller format, that my forms need more space to grow, and they were right. 

 

 

On my 2006 trip, I was also painting en plein air in the garden, but I was more representational; I needed to paint what I saw in front of me. 

 

 

 

 

On this trip, I also painted what I saw,

but was able to add

"what was inside my head."

 

Then I tried to paint like an Impressionist; now I am an Abstract Impressionist --

 

Working from nature,

but making nature work for me.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

And now that I have returned to

paint the gardens of New Jersey, 

instead of France,

my work is even freer. 

 

I usually paint in one specific garden

in Montclair,

The Van Vleck House and Garden, because it is beautiful, close,

and it is usually quiet. 

 

I have painted there over the years. 

 

 

 

 

But now my paintings are inspired by what I see in front of me, instead of copying what I see. I know where I painted, but you would have a difficult time telling where from the finished painting.

 

And as I have said previously, there is no horizon line.  The colors (inspired by flowers)  just become many color shapes.  And these many shapes group together to form one large shape on the canvas.  I continue working in a vertical  format because I think it makes the viewer not look for a horizon line; and thus the paintings are flatter.

Group Exhibition

at Agora Gallery

in the Chelsea area of New York City

entitled "Divergent Realities".

 

The exhibition will feature some of her paintings

from Giverney, as well as some that were painted before and after this inspiring retreat.
