Berkshire Hathaway Home Services NJ Properties (on Bloomfield Avenue next to Whole Foods in Montclair, NJ) presents The Montclair Ten Returns, a selection of works by artists from the Montclair Art Museum (MAM) staff organized by Martha Kelshaw, Manager of Public Programs, Montclair Art Museum.

The Opening Reception is Thursday, April 7 from 5 to 9 pm and coincides with MAM’s FREE First Thursday Night.

Montclair, NJ – Beginning Thursday, April 7, 2016, Berkshire Hathaway Home Services will present The Montclair Ten Returns, a selection of works in a range of media by artists from the Montclair Art Museum staff. The exhibition showcases approximately 15 – 20 works by 10 artists living and working in the NJ area.

The exhibit will comprise various mediums including painting, photography, prints, drawing, and ceramics. The Montclair Ten Returns will be on view from April 7 – May 22, 2016. Each artist featured in the exhibition works in various facets of the Montclair Art Museum, whether behind the scenes in the Education Department, teaching in the Studios, inspiring creativity aboard the mobile MAM Art Truck, or volunteering in the Communication Department. The Montclair Art Museum employs many talented artists.

This is the second year that Berkshire Hathaway Home Services NJ is hosting this event. The debut exhibition last year at this time was such a success, the Company decided to host it again this year. It is also the second year that Susan Marx is participating in the Exhibition.

ABOUT SUSAN MARX

Susan Marx is an Abstract Impressionist artist whose paintings are the result of her own radical amazement at the beauty of the visual world and her own need to turn that experience through her. Using nature as her frame of reference, Marx paints her interpretation of what nature leaves her with. She is concerned with light and what light does to color, which is why she calls herself an Abstract Impressionist. Her paintings are the conversations between her eyes, her mind, her heart and her gut as well as the canvas in front of her. Marx enjoys enticing and engaging her viewers, drawing them into a fresh and beautiful world. Marx uses fast-drying acrylic paints which allow her to record her color impressions quickly, painting with thick, bold, rich colors and gestural brushstrokes. She leaves parts of the canvas blank intentionally allowing the painting and the viewer’s eye to breathe. She enjoys the process of putting color next to color, trying to capture the essence of her subject in her painting through color and emotion, leaving the rest to the viewer's imagination, drawing them into and engaging them through her process.

Someone once said Marx works to the muse of Monet, Van Gogh and Joan Mitchell; she was thrilled. They helped guide her in the journey to become the artist she is today.

Marx has travelled extensively and exhibited widely. Her works may be found in collections in the US and abroad. She is currently represented by Agora Gallery, in Chelsea, and Ashok Jain Gallery, on the Lower East Side in NYC, LF Contemporary in Sag Harbor, New York, and she exhibits her work at the ACL Gallery in Livingston, NJ.

This month, Susan's works are also on display at the FIAF (French Institute Alliance Francais) in Montclair, New Jersey from April 3rd through April 27th. Art by Susan Levin: The 'Sandy' Series

Two Summers ago, artist Susan Levin made a trip to NYC from her home in Rockville, Maryland with her significant other. They stayed at a lovely boutique hotel on the upper east side of Manhattan and had planned for a wonderful extended visit with family, friends and all the sights of a city they both love. What they hadn’t planned on was a visit from ‘Hurricane Sandy,’ one of the worst storms the area has seen in decades. ‘Sandy’ tore through the area, taking down power lines, darkening the streets, shutting down subways and trains, flooding avenues and businesses, wreaking havoc, panic and fear that extended far beyond the confines of the city and keeping Susan and her SO within the confines of their hotel.

 

Always one to ‘make lemons out of lemonade,’ Susan reached for her camera and began shooting the cityscapes outside of her hotel window. Fifteen floors above the city, she took some amazing digital photographs, zooming in on the specific details of each picture she snapped with the artistic vision of her creative mind framing each shot with the utmost perfection of detail, composition and subject matter in mind. Later, she would digitally ‘play’ with each image enhancing details to create an artistic version of each picture with astounding results.

Susan’s ‘Sandy Series’ continues to  garner extensive praise, with ‘Rooftops’ generating widespread interest from the Real Estate and corporate community. Following a successful Art Show Opening at Sotheby's International Realty in Sag Harbor, New York (currently on view through May 11th), the three images shown in this blog, Rooftops (top), Madison (left) and 15th Floor (below left), were brought into the Southampton, NY branch of Sotheby's International Realty, where they are currently on view as well. Everyone who see's these images and hears the story have the same feeling in their response - that in spite of the destruction we all know Sandy brought to the area, herein are images of a city that continues to rise above the daily challenges it faces, standing strong and bright, representing the diversity of architectural styles from historic to modern, as equally as diverse as the city itself.

Although the series was taken in NYC, the subject could be representative of any city, and the work would be at home in traditional and contemporary homes, offices and corporations here and abroad.

One of the many advantages to Susan’s digital series is that each piece may be reproduced so that designers and corporations may use the same image throughout multiple locations. Each image comes in 18x24 and 24x36, and is mounted in a plexiglass boxed framework ready to hang.
